Saturday Sample: Blue 52

Welcome to Saturday Sample. For the past few weeks I've been sharing samples from Blue 52. So far we've learned that President Richard Lovinggood was murdered by his wife who then committed suicide. Their son Hank was raised by his grandfather Senator Henry Lovinggood. A new high speed train is coming through the cemetery where President Lovinggood is buried, and Hank has made plans to open the coffins once they are disinterred so he can see his parents. He was only 3 when they died, and he doesn't really remember them.

My heroine Kathryn Sinclair learned about this plan from her uncle who is the director of the funeral home where the president's body will go. Her employer tells her to set up a meeting with Hank after he sees his parents. Last week she said she hoped it went well so she could be in the history books and have the satisfaction of righting a terrible wrong. In today's scene, Hank's grandmother has found out that he wishes to view his parents' remains.

God, I’ve had an awful day

Hank slung his briefcase into the backseat and ripped off his tie. From the moment he’d gotten out of bed this morning, things had gone wrong. At times like this he wondered why he had ever wanted to be a lawyer anyway, especially a prosecutor. He had felt confident of a conviction, but at the last minute the defense blindsided him, and the slime ball had walked. Some lawyer I turned out to be.

He entered the flow of late afternoon traffic and turned his car toward home. I hope I’ll have time for a good, long soak in the tub before dinner. I need it to get the kinks out of my shoulders and back.

Hank knew he’d have to wait for his bath the minute he opened the front door. His grandmother and grandfather shouted so loudly at each other that the pictures almost danced on the walls. He heard his own name mentioned more than once. His shoulders knotted again. He had a good idea why.

“I heard the two of you yelling several blocks from here,” he reproached as he entered the living room.

God, I’ve had an awful day.

His grandmother whirled around so fast she almost lost her balance and coldly attacked. “The Sinclair Mortuary called today. They left a message for you.”

“Oh?”

Her face turned cherry red. “You can drop the innocent act with me, young man! Have you totally lost your wits? Your mother and father died thirty years ago! Do you think you can pop the coffin lids and see them as they were in life?”

“Grandma...”

“Don’t interrupt me. This is crazy. You don’t need to see...” She broke off for a moment as a spasm of grief contorted her face. “This is all your doing, Henry. You raised Richard to be a hawk, but you’ve raised Hank to be a damned mourning dove!”

Saturday Sample

In this excerpt from Blue 52 my hero is thinking of when he was a young child. He has started to question whether or not the history books are right. Blue 52 is available at most online retail outlets and fine book stores everywhere.

"First Lady Kills President Lovinggood"
December 29, 2018

Thirty years later Hank Lovinggood embarks on a quest to prove his mother's innocence and punish the killers who took his family from him.  Together Hank and lovely physicist Kathryn Sinclair confront an implacable, twisted, merciless enemy who'll do whatever it takes to hide the truth forever.

Excerpt:

When he thought of them, he usually got a warm, safe feeling. He could distinctly remember both of them sitting on the bed with him reading him a story before he went to sleep.

A faint smile curved his lips when he thought of the time he and his mother had sneaked up on his father while he was asleep on the beach. They had poured ocean water from a little sand bucket onto his stomach. He had come awake with a roar and jumped up and chased them down the beach. When he caught them, he had threatened to throw both of them into the ocean. Instead, they had walked down the beach hand in hand and found a hot dog stand where his father bought everyone a hot dog.

Other memories clamored for attention, like the time his mother fell and broke her ankle. He could still picture the fear on his father’s face. His mother had bitten her lip and hidden her face against his father’s shoulder. His dad had hugged her and looked as if he were trying to take away her pain.

When they came home from the hospital, his father had carried her upstairs and stayed with her the entire evening. Had some of his father’s aides fussed at him for missing appointments? He thought he remembered his father bellowing at them and telling them to leave him alone.

What in the name of God happened on that mountain where they died?

Snippet Sunday

In this excerpt from Blue 52, my heroine runs to my hero after a savage attack.

“I came to tell you…” Kathryn fell silent as a spasm of shivering seized her. She tasted blood and realized she had bitten her tongue because her teeth wouldn’t quit chattering.

Hank fractionally raised her chin to look at the cut on her neck. She tried to stop trembling, but she saw he had gotten blood on his hand when he raised her chin. With a small cry, she wrapped her arms around him and squeezed hard. Hank picked her up and carried her to the living room. He sat down with her on his lap and cuddled her close.

Kathryn buried her face against his neck. With his arms around her, she felt safer. Hank would take care of her; she gave in to her fear and started to cry.

Saturday Sample: Blue 52

Today's excerpt comes from Blue 52. In this excerpt, my hero recruits a retired Secret Service agent to help him prove that his mother didn't kill his father. First a blurb, then an excerpt. Sorry, no picture. Blogger wouldn't cooperate with me.

Excerpt:

"Damn, Hank," Rudy exclaimed as he paced around the room. "Do you know what you’re saying?"

"I do."

"Do you have any evidence?"

"Sort of." Hank told Rudy about Scott’s files, his conversation with Shirley Grissom, and his meeting with the Stantons at the cemetery.

"Damn, Hank," Rudy said again. He finally sat back down. "You can’t just go around saying things like that. You have to be able to prove it, and what you have isn’t enough."

"I know. I was hoping you could tell me something that would help the investigation."

Rudy strode toward the kitchen. "I need another beer. Want one?"

"No, I’m fine."

Rudy returned from the kitchen with another beer and a thoughtful expression on his face. "Glass and Tate weren’t usually assigned to your dad. A day before your mother and dad were supposed to leave for the Colorado mountains to go skiing with Stanton, five or six of your father’s agents got food poisoning. Glass and Tate were replacements for two of the sick agents.

"As far as I know, they were good men. I’ve also heard they worked like the devil himself to save your parents."

"Where are they now? I guess they’re retired, right?"

Rudy leaned back in his chair. "Well, now, that’s a funny thing. Tate committed suicide about a year after your father was murdered, and Glass died in a house fire."

Hank’s mouth went dry. "When?"

"Five or six months after your father died."

Hank’s eyes flashed, communicating his excitement to Rudy. "It all makes perfect sense to me. Stanton used Glass and Tate to kill my parents, but he didn’t trust them to keep his dirty secret. He killed them as soon as he thought he could get away with it. I think I need to see some financial records. I’d like to see if their lifestyle changed after Dad was murdered."

"That would be helpful. Men have done murder for money almost as long as the human race has existed." Rudy thought for a moment. "What about Baker and Watson? They were the ones who came to relieve Glass and Tate. They were present when the shots were fired."

"I think I need to investigate them too. My uncle’s files didn’t mention them by name, but their presence makes them suspect as far as I’m concerned."

"Let me help you." Rudy’s eyes shone with excitement. "I’m not sure I buy your theory, but I’ll find out everything I can about Glass and Tate. If you’re right, I’d love to be in the history books as one of the men who uncovered the best kept conspiracy in history."

Hank held out his hand. "Welcome aboard."
