Chapter One

Last Week



“I see now how he intends to play this game. I’m betting he sends us several places before we find the proof we need to win the money. We need to hurry. It’ll be dark before long, and I’d like to find the second coordinates so we can keep moving.”

Andy’s eyebrows shot straight up. “You don’t plan to sleep until we find the cache?”

“That’s right.”

“That’s plain nutty,” he objected. “We have to rest sometime. Besides, how do you think we can find the cache if it’s the middle of the night?

This week: I've skipped a few pages here. Andy and Liesel have found the second set of coordinates and stopped at a motel for the night. This excerpt is in Liesel's POV.
They pulled the black limo up in front of the warehouse. It was a crumbling structure with boarded up windows and peeling paint. Water stood in puddles from the recent near-­hurricane that had downed trees and knocked out power all over the city. A beer can rolled in front of the car, its tinny sound grating on her ears.

 William stopped the car and opened Liesel’s door for her. The wind pushed and pulled on her coat, blowing her hair across her face the moment she stepped out of the car. He took her arm and led her into the decrepit building. Sheer terror assailed her. Something awful was inside that warehouse; she could feel it.

Chapter One

Last Week



“No, I don’t see anything.”

Andy shrugged. “It was worth a shot.” He picked up the can to put it back in the rack.

“Wait,” Liesel cried. “I see something taped to the bottom.”

She jerked a plastic envelope off the bottom of the trash can and took out a sheet of laminated pink paper. “Congratulations,” she read aloud. “You have found the next set of coordinates.”

After copying the coordinates onto the edge of her map, they put the envelope back where they had found it.

This week: Andy and Liesel find Melton's first communication. Liesel speaks first.

Chapter One

Last Week


Thank goodness he’s finally fallen asleep. Liesel took a deep, deep breath and softly blew it out. He had tried for two hours straight to make her talk to him, but he’d finally given up.

She sneaked a peek at Bryce while he slept. He looked even more appealing now than he had last night. Hmm. Look at those little crinkles in the corners of his eyes. He’d probably do well in Hollywood. She could picture him cast in the role of the cowboy good guy, the one who wore the white hat and faced the bad guys in the street. He’d always win because of his great virtue.

This week

Frowning, she sped past a slow mini van. It didn’t matter how perfect Andy Bryce looked. She wanted nothing to do with him. If only they found the cache soon! Her life pleased her very much just as it was. Frankly, she resented Melton for tempting her into this stupid game.

“Hey, wake up.”
Andy slowly raised his head. His neck felt stiff enough to break. He had leaned his head back against the headrest for far too long.

Last Week


“Don’t be too sure about that. A million dollars is a lot of money.”

Why did she want his phone turned off so badly? She had offered a plausible explanation, but he’d bet she had another reason. As a marshal he knew that people lied, some of them very convincingly. Unfortunately, he thought she had skirted the truth. His internal hackles rose a bit. Did he really want to play ball with Liesel Wolf? He had enough troubles without adding any more.

The Mustang shot forward the second the light changed; guess he’d waited too late to quit.

This week: We're in Andy's POV

Chapter One

Last Week


Andy bobbed his head at her. “Oh, yes ma’am. I understand all right. I usually get it when people talk down to me.”

“I imagine you get that a lot.”

Andy felt his face burning. “Look...”

“If you intend to go with me you’d better get your butt in
gear.” She scooped up her computer and strode toward the parking
lot.

“I’ll be hanged if I go anywhere with that little witch,” Andy
muttered. 


This week: We're in Andy's POV
He burst out of the restaurant to find the Mustang already sitting beside the door.

 The window slid down, and her eyes bored into his. “Well? Make up your mind. No one will think the less of you if you back out now.”

 Andy changed his mind, not about to give her the satisfaction of making him quit. He yanked the door open, and the Mustang sprang forward almost before he got in.

“Fasten your seatbelt,” she ordered. “I’d hate for anything to happen to you. Then cut off your cell phone.”

Last Week


“Then we’d better get rolling.”

Ms. Wolf passed a map to Andy. “Either use a computer program or plot the shortest route to South Carolina.”

“I guess you get to drive, huh?”

Her emerald eyes skewered him with green fire. “Yes, that is right. It is my car so I will drive. If I get tired I will let you take a turn. Do we understand each other, Mr. Bryce? We are supposed to be partners, which means I will not allow you to play the role of a macho Neanderthal.”

Chapter One

Last Week
She had put her hair up as she had done the previous evening. He was sure she knew how it showcased the graceful, feminine curve of her pretty neck.

Her first, tart words broke the spell. “Good morning, Mr. Bryce. Why don’t you put your bag in the trunk with my things?”

“Sure.” He’d told her to call him Andy, but evidently she had no intention of doing so.

She took her computer with her when they went into the IHOP. “Let’s eat a big breakfast so we can skip lunch,” she suggested. “We’ll save time if we do.”

This week: We're in Andy's POV

“Fine by me.”

 By seven fifty, they’d finished their breakfast of bacon, eggs, and pancakes and had their latitude and longitude chart unrolled. Andy couldn’t wait to hear from Melton. Trying to make conversation with Liesel Wolf reminded him of talking to a cool, marble statue. Every time he spoke she stared blankly at him, but she didn’t deign to make a reply unless she couldn’t get out of it.

Promptly at eight, Melton emailed the first set of coordinates. Andy quickly scanned his chart. “Those coordinates are in South Carolina.”

 “South Carolina? That’s at least twelve hours from here.”

Excerpt: 
Chapter One

Last Week
If she cancelled, that odious Andy Bryce might nose around to find out why. Of all the men in the world, why did she end up with him as a partner? Her foot pressed marginally harder against the Mustang’s accelerator.

Oh, he looked great. She gave him that. She had always admired men like Bryce, who must be six‑foot-­three, at least, and had shoulders to die for. He was handsome in a rugged way with a tan that suggested he spent a lot of time outdoors. She also loved those blue eyes of his. They had sparkled with interest when he first saw her. But he was a marshal! 

This week: We start with Liesel's POV and end in Andy's.
In his presence, old, unhappy memories scratched their way to the front of her mind, a totally unacceptable situation.

 Truthfully, though, it didn’t matter what he did for a living. After learning the hard way that trusting a man brought nothing but unhappiness, she had promised herself she’d never fall into that trap again. A promise she intended to keep.

Chapter Two
Andy got out of Tony’s SUV, shouldering his bag as he squinted against the early morning sun. “You owe me one, Tony, and I won’t let you forget it.”

 “Oh, quit griping. Once you get started Ms. Wolf’ll thaw a little, and you’ll have a great time.”

 “Yeah, so you say,” Andy replied with a scowl.

 He slammed the door and Tony took off, undoubtedly congratulating himself on evading the game.
