Tori Chase Is Here!!

Welcome to my blog.  If you've come for Beyond the Book, scroll on down after you meet my author friend Tori Chase.  She and I share a publisher, Astraea Press.  She's a very interesting lady.  You can read more about her at the end of the post.  Tori is the author of The Santiago Brothers Book One: Rafael.  She's also the author of Virginia Justice Book One: Serial Games.   Let's read some blurbs and excerpts.

Let's start with Rafael.

Blurb:

The Santiago Brothers Book One: Rafael

The last time Detective Genie Green let a man humiliate her was her college sweetheart—never again. Yet, when former high school lothario Rafael Santiago returns to town as the consulting detective on her case, Genie’s rule of never allowing another man to best her is challenged. Can she trust him long enough to solve this case and get the glory?

Rafael can’t seem to outrun his delinquent past. When The Snakes, a criminal organization he used to belong to, begin murdering people from his hometown, he has a chance to right some of his past wrongs. Will arresting the murderers be enough to redeem him, or will a certain beautiful detective pay the ultimate price instead?

A Christian interracial romantic suspense.

EXCERPT:

“Wow. You know, you have a real talent with women.”

Rafa gave her a sideways glance but didn’t answer. She saw the corners of his mouth fight an upward pull.

“I bet they have you working all the female subject interviews.” Genie tugged hard on the door handle.

“You don’t have to be jealous Genie,” came his smooth reply.

She. Wasn’t. Jealous.

Jealousy was an emotion for the weak...for a girl who couldn’t keep her man interested in her. Sure, plenty of women fell all over Jeff. He was classically handsome, a jock, and destined to follow in his parent’s footsteps and be a doctor or a high-powered attorney. Genie’s parents were middle-class, not poor, but not rich. She was considered pretty but not the stunner that should have been on Jeff’s arm. But Jeff chose her. She had no reason to be jealous, but she was. Those women who fell all over Jeff? He fell all over them, too. Wherever smoke rose, fire always followed. Always.

Now, let's move on to Serial Games.

Virginia Justice Book One: Serial Games

FBI profiler Maggie Weston has a reputation for identifying the most gruesome of killers. But her reputation is put on the line when US Marshal Brandon Worth walks into her office with news the one case that haunted her the most, John Michael Burrows, has escaped federal custody. Brandon needs her help; she understands how Burrows thinks and the best tracker on the east coast isn't about to pass up her expertise. Maggie and Brandon have to work together to catch a serial murderer and the closer they get to Burrows, the more their hearts become involved. While insecurities and bitterness threaten a budding relationship between Maggie and Brandon, an elusive killer terrorizes a small Virginia county with a game he plans on winning.

A Christian interracial romantic suspense.

EXCERPT

Maggie's eyes slowly traveled the width of the elevator door until they found Brandon's reflection in the mirrored panels lining the inside of the car. Broad shoulders rippled down to muscular biceps that contracted with the force he used to grip the rail behind him.

She needed to assert herself now.

"I'm going to go over some of the documentation the district attorney's office faxed us to see if I might be able to find the missing link enabling Burrows to escape custody."

Brandon's eyes narrowed. Obviously business wasn't what he wanted to hear, and how easily he could read her discomfort troubled her. He had an uncanny knack for interpreting her body language. What did that mean? Whatever it meant, she didn't have the time to analyze it now. She straightened her shoulders. "Knowing who helped him escape can perhaps shed some light on his next move."

Brandon's level stare remained.

Ok, he's not buying it. Regardless, I refuse to fall...

"Do you forgive me?"

"What?" The question about forgiveness startled her. He had apologized but she wasn't interested in discussing it. All she wanted to do was wash the smoke out of her hair and crash. It was going on midnight... or past it; she had lost track of time.

In one stride he was in front of her, one arm around her waist, the other guiding her chin up. His lips were warm and smooth as they glided over hers. He pulled back and disappointment filled Maggie at the loss of his heat. She stared into the dark thunderstorm whirling in his eyes.

"Do you forgive me?" His hoarse voice rumbled through to her inner core.

The elevator bell chimed. Startled, Maggie nearly jumped at the ring. She turned to the console. Her numbered floor illuminated.

"Saved by the bell." He released her.

Maggie couldn't resist looking at him. His eyes were veiled but the confident smirk returned. As the elevator doors opened, Maggie wondered who would be the more difficult challenge to overcome: Burrows or Brandon?

Beyond the Book

Hello, readers, my name is Liesel Wolf, er Liesel Bryce.  Elaine told my story in her book Never Tust a Pretty Wolf.  I have such wonderful news to share.  Andy and I are having a baby.  Right now we're searching for a crib.  I've found several that I like.  If you like one lots more than the other, leave a comment and tell me which one you like.

Here's the first one. I found it at http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3331891  I like the cherry finish, and I also like the attached changing table.  The bed is convertible too.  It can be used as a crib, toddler bed, and full sized bed.  It's by Sorelle.

This is the other one Andy and I liked. I love the sleigh shape.  It has a nice cottage feel to it.  It's by Pottery Barn, and it converts to a toddler bed.  You can buy it at http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/sleigh-fixed-gate-crib/?pkey=bcribs

betWeen

Welcome to Daniel Frost's blog tour.  Daniel is the author of Between, a YA fantasy.  I have two guests at the blog today, so after you spend a little time on this post, please scroll down to my next guest.  Daniel, welcome to my blog.  Could you tell us a little bit about you and your writing?

Actually by trade I'm an aerospace engineer and got into writing when my company started sending me all over the world... funny thing that those airplanes can't seem to break anywhere near home. But all those trips left me with some free time and a laptop. So I made the best of it and started writing to keep myself busy and stop spending money.

2.Sounds like a good use of time to me.  How long did you write before you got published?

I hardly knew what I was doing in the beginning, but knew enough that the larger publishing houses required an agent and I didn't want to go that route just yet. I decided to try out some of the smaller publishing houses and got real lucky by picking a small independent publisher that was just getting into the business and looking for manuscripts in my genre. Not a whole lot more than right place, right time.

3.What is your favorite genre? Why?

I like just about anything that can displace reality and take you away from the daily grind. Doesn't matter if it's fantasy, sci-fi, a thriller or a good mystery. As long as it sucks you in and makes some of those all consuming problems disappear, for at least a little while, they're all good.

4.I totally agree!  What are you working on now?

I'm not currently writing anything at the moment. I'm trying my hand in digital art and freelancing some book covers. I've got a few good ideas knocking around for a second book in the betWeen world, but nothing has yet taken hold.

5.I'd like to know about digital art myself.  What advice would you give aspiring writers?

That's easy. Don't write if you expect to quit the day job. Write because you want to... just enjoy it. Take yourself away to the world you've created and enjoy that place. If it ever feels like work than put it aside and try something else for a while. Keep it fun.

6.Super advice.  I haven't quit my day job either.  Would you share your links with us?

Young Chance N. Counter thought her life was nothing more than a series of meaningless, random events. But when she finds some crinkly, yellowed pages from an old book, with the same drawing of a shadowy door in each one, this all suddenly changes. Pages in hand, and armed with only a flashlight, Chance finds the shadowy portal and steps into the place between night and day... it is the place where nightmares and fairytales and creatures that go bump in the night were created. It is the place of lore and legend and dreams, and the place where the Shadow King reigns supreme.
But to leave, Chance, along with a new ally (who happens to be a talking fox) must summon all of her courage and use all of her wit to travel through this bizarre world and find her way home.

Welcome Don McNair!

Welcome to Don McNair's blog tour.  Don is the author of Mystery at Magnolia Mansion and Mystery on Firefly Knob.  I truly love both of these titles.  They have a bit of a retro sound that I love.  Don, thank you so much for letting me be a part of your tour. I believe that Mystery at Magnolia Mansion is based on a true experience.  Could you tell us why you chose to write about a real event?  And if you don't mind saying, did you also have a blossoming love affair at Magnolia Mansion?

Don: I actually owned Magnolia Mansion, which was built as a hotel in Magnolia Springs, Alabama in the late 1800s to house northern visitors there to buy land. It was in disrepair—falling down would be an apt description—and my wife and I invested ourselves and our money to bring it back to life.  We’d just finished that task when I decided to write a romance novel, and it occurred to me to use the house as its setting, and have my heroine do the same things to the house that we did.

The book is about Brenda Maxwell, a young and eager interior designer out to make her mark. When her new lawyer client tells her to “paint, wallpaper, whatever” his hundred-year-old landmark mansion, she figures her grandiose plans will fit handily into his edict’s “whatever” section, and they’re launched into a constant head-bumping mode.  Brenda’s poor money management skills (that’s his view, but what does he know?) and lawyer David Hasbrough’s ridiculous need to control her life (that’s her well-reasoned evaluation of the situation) combine to keep the battle going. Is this couple’s romantic goose cooked? Well, she can’t be near him without sparks flying and goose bumps popping out everywhere.  But that mansion has to be done right!

I wanted to reflect Magnolia Springs’s great history, so I built in a mystery about the house that started in 1930s and has a great effect on the hero and heroine today. Current action takes place the real world of Southern Alabama, and I think the reader will appreciate that setting.

As for my “blossoming love affair,” yes, I did have one.  It started more than forty years ago when I met my wife, and it continues to this day. I really don’t think I deserve her love, but—hey, she’s stuck with me now!

Elaine: I'm betting she doesn't feel stuck at all.  I'm sure she thinks she's a fortunate lady.  I know exactly where Magnolia Springs is.  When my husband was a small child he went to a one room school there.  His brother was in the first grade, and the teacher let him come too.  He always fetched coal for the stove.  We visited Magnolia Springs a few years ago.  Is Mystery on Firefly Knob, the second book in your series, also based on a real place?  Did you have to do much research for the book?

Don: The answer to both questions is “yes.”

While sightseeing on the Cumberland Plateau near Crossville, Tennessee, my wife and I found a Knob where the Plateau drops off into the Sequatchie Valley, 1800 feet below. We parked and hiked into the woods and found an abandoned cabin on the Plateau’s edge, overlooking the Valley, which I later learned had been owned by a silent movie actress. I realized it would be a terrific setting for a romance novel.

And yes, I did do research, on both the hero and heroine.  I made the heroine Erica an antiques dealer in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where I lived for several years and started my own antiques business.  My antiques knowledge certainly helped build the story.  I also read stories at the time about rare “sync” fireflies—they blink in unison—and decided to make the Knob the third site in the world that had them.  Further, I had the hero working out of nearby Oak Ridge National Labs. I did extensive research to give him a real job there, and to make it look authentic.

As the story opens, Erica Phillips visits choice inherited property on Rymer’s Knob overlooking that beautiful valley, and finds scientist Mike Callahan camped there to study the unique fireflies. She needs to sell it fast to buy a new building for her antiques business, but he freaks out when a condo builder offers her a contract. Miffed, she tells him, “If I have my way, this place will be sold within the week. And, Mr. Callahan, I will have my way!”  Their budding romance plays out before a background of a murder mystery, distrust, and heart-racing hormones.

Elaine: Let's look at some blurbs and excerpts, shall we?  The first blurb and excerpt is from Mystery at Magnolia Mansion.

BLURB:
Brenda Maxwell’s new interior design client tells her to “paint, wallpaper, whatever” his hundred-year-old landmark mansion, “but for God’s sake, don’t go overboard.” When she figures her grandiose plans will fit handily into his edict’s “whatever” section, they’re launched into a constant head-bumping mode.

NOTE: Don McNair actually lived in this house, and did the very things to it that he has heroine Brenda Maxwell do.

Excerpt:
“Well, hello!”

She jumped. There he stood, directly in front of her, stark naked!  Well, except for a bath towel wrapped snugly around his hips. He was dripping water on her nice clean floor. She tried to turn away, but her muscles refused to budge. His chest, sprinkled with curly black hair, narrowed to a tight stomach which showed off six-pack abs. His muscular bare arms and legs were certainly not those of a desk jockey. No, the man got exercise somehow.

“Oh!  Oh, I’m sorry!” She finally insisted that her muscles work, and they grudgingly turned her toward the door. Her cheeks burned. Her mind was in turmoil.

“Me, too,” he said. He flashed a silly grin, backed into the room he’d come from, and closed the door. It was a downstairs bedroom right off the kitchen, complete with a full bath, which she’d earlier pegged as a live-in maid or cook’s living quarters. He’d apparently swung a big deal at that garage sale because she’d noticed the mismatched bed, chest, and end table in that room, which weren’t there on her first visit. The only other furniture in the whole house was the rusty chrome-legged kitchen table and its four matching chairs he’d apparently bought at the same time. If that was his idea of a great décor . . .

And now let's look at Mystery on Firefly Knob.

Blurb:
When Erica Phillips visits choice inherited property on a Cumberland Plateau knob overlooking a beautiful valley, she finds scientist Mike Callahan camped there to study unique fireflies. She needs to sell it fast to buy a new building for her antiques business, but he freaks out when a condo builder offers her a contract. Miffed, she tells him, “If I have my way, this place will be sold within the week. And, Mr. Callahan, I will have my way!”
Their budding romance plays out before a background of a murder mystery, distrust, and heart-racing hormones. Will it blossom into a lifetime relationship?

Excerpt:

She set her salad on the table and went to close the cabin door, and paused, her hand on the latch, to peer out. Mike was standing at the table by his tent, staring at her.

Her heart raced, and her face became hot. She pulled the door closed quickly and shuddered. Why was she feeling this way? She retraced her steps and sat at the table, and crossed her arms on its surface and stared at the door, as if she could see right through it to her squatter’s camp. What was this attraction? He was an interloper, for heaven’s sake, a total stranger who had literally forced himself into her life. Yet he was having this very strange effect on her. Her heart was pumping to beat the band, probably producing much more heat than that little air conditioner could possibly handle, like there was an actual, physical connection between her and that Mike person which took over her very body. That kiss sat between them like the proverbial eight-hundred pound gorilla. Her fingers involuntarily found her lips, and she closed her eyes and imagined Mike’s own luscious lips gently touch them, and his body become one with hers…

Six Sentence Sunday and a Virtual Book Tour

Today's excerpt comes from my WIP which is tentatively titled Fortuna.  In this excerpt my heroine is spending the night alone in the old house she and her fiance are remodeling.

The footsteps paused right outside her door. Frozen with fear, Aimee couldn’t move. She lay there and watched as the door slowly swung open. OMG! OMG! In her wildest dreams she wouldn’t have expected the dreadful apparition that confronted her.

I'm starting my Goddess Fish virtual book tour for Never Trust a Pretty Wolf tomorrow.  I've posted the tour info below.  I'd apppreciate it if you'd follow the tour whenever you can.

Sweet Saturday Sample

Welcome to Sweet Saturday Sample.  In this excerpt, my heroine Liesel has just been arrested by my hero, Andy.

Blurb:
Liesel Wolf has a secret, a dangerous secret she’ll go to any lengths to conceal. When she’s paired in a charity game with sexy marshal Andy Bryce, a man with secrets of his own, her carefully constructed world comes crashing down, and Liesel’s on a collision course with her past.

Excerpt:

He picked a nice-looking motel not far from the airport. “Okay, let’s go in,” he said.

“I’m still wearing handcuffs.  Will you take them off, please.”

“So, you can be polite if you want to. That’s nice to know.”

He rummaged around in her bag and found a sweater which he threw over the handcuffs. “Don’t try anything with me. I’ve had enough of your shenanigans.”

After he registered them at the desk, they went upstairs to their room. “Bland and generic,”Andy muttered as he checked the place. “But it’ll do.”

“Why didn’t you get separate rooms?” Liesel haughtily demanded, her eyes filled with scorn. “Do you have an ulterior motive for bringing me here? Do you want to find out what it’s like to possess a woman who belonged to William Wolf?”
