Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors. My excerpt this week is from Her Kind of Man which is available at Amazon and most online retail outlets. When you finish at my blog, you can find more lovely sentences here.
Blurb:
Ross Williams has been in love with Kara Cochrane since they were kids, so when Kara's fiancé Brandon Miles cheats on her and calls off their wedding, Ross steps in to rescue the damsel in distress.
A heartbroken Kara just wants to get on with her life, and hunky Ross provides her with a definite distraction, that is until she starts falling for him. Big time.
But a devastating family secret threatens to destroy everything that Kara hold dear, including her relationship with Ross.
Excerpt: This scene takes place at Kara and Ross's wedding reception after Ross's nephew knocked the cake over on the floor.
If she lived to be a hundred she never wanted to think about that night or that dress again because that night she found out who and what she really was.
A wave of dizziness passed over her. She forced herself to breathe normally. If she didn't stop taking such shallow, rapid breaths, she'd hyperventilate.
So she received her guests with icing staining her wedding dress. It didn't matter. The detachment that made the ceremony bearable hadn't failed her. What a relief.
Excellent snippet. I really loved the last two sentences and can almost feel how she is feeling.
ReplyDeleteElaine, you've done it again. Poignant eight pulled me in. Icing stained wedding dress and all.
ReplyDeleteGreat hook, lots of sensual imagery. Intriguing 8!
ReplyDeleteWow. How sad to see her going through the motions on her wedding day. Loved the set up with the cake and the icing stains. Great job!
ReplyDeleteShe's got excellent grace under pressure. A lot of brides wouldn't want to go on after something like that.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really intriguing way to end the excerpt. Why is she adept at detachment? Lots of reasons to keep reading this one :)
ReplyDeleteNice eight, Elaine. Her feelings about the whole day show up in her complete detachment from the situation. Good job!
ReplyDeleteAwesome snippet! It gives me insight into the story but also deep pov on her so I get right inside her head.
ReplyDeleteShe might be holding it together, but I felt her inner turmoil. Powerful. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Carrie-Anne, she really shows grace under pressure. Quite a situation going on here, definitely makes me want to read more. Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteWow, this eight has me kind of sad. Should be her happiest day...
ReplyDeleteWeddings are stressful, but this one sounds like it takes the cake. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
ReplyDeleteHer need for detachment makes me worry about the future of the marriage...
poor Kara. I love the 8. I can't imagine but she's holding up
ReplyDeleteAwe, poor Ross. He's like the consolation groom. It must have been hard on him to be so in love with her, and have her just go through the motions on their wedding day.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I guess that's one way to get the girl you've always wanted :-)
Good 8, Elaine! :-)
Too bad that she is having a wedding nightmare again. I can feel so much pressure in this.
ReplyDeleteI want to know what she learned about herself. And I gather they did get married.
ReplyDeleteGood job of showing her lack of emotional involvement in the wedding festivities. Makes me shiver to wonder what she found out about herself.
