Why is the paranormal genre so popular?
I think this question is almost as popular as the genre
itself, and I'm still no more sure about the answer than I ever have been. I
just know that I've fallen into the spell of it as much as many others have. It
began at sixteen for me, with The Vampire Files series by P. N. Elrod, Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice
and the first few Anita Blake books by Laurell K. Hamilton--that last series
only until Anita started annoying me.
The idea of the paranormal has always been popular, for
centuries. I think in previous ages, much of life was stifled for some reason
or another and occult fascination allowed an "out" for the craziness
that lives in us all. It was a great thing to explain things away that we didn't
otherwise have answers for. It was the mystery and the forbidden of it all, and
human beings just love getting into things we shouldn't.
It's also a way to play in things we won't ever be able to
do. It's why we write and read fantasy and science fiction, too. Paranormal is
just one facet of being able to step into other worlds and other lives. All
fiction is, but these genres take it a step further.
For me, I like bringing the inhuman and the human together.
I like taking vampires and werewolves and powerful supernatural beings
and...making them do their laundry. In Adelheid, I take these beings and put
them in "regular" lives, then write stories to blend both sides: the
human and the supernatural.
I can't be the only one who is amused about a werewolf
getting into a fight with the supermarket self checkout lane, right?
Synopsis
Cameron's Law
Cameron's Law has made all supernatural creatures legal citizens, and the boy next door has suddenly become the werewolf next door. With Sadie Stanton, vampire and one of the public faces of the legislation, calling the little town of Adelheid, Connecticut home, it can't help but be a focal point for these once mythical beings.
But when vampires start attacking werewolves without provocation, Adelheid draws the attention of those that would seek to have Cameron's Law repealed and would send the preternaturals back into the shadows they used to hide in, but without the safety of their anonymity and their law.
Can Sadie keep the city's two biggest species from descending into chaos and war before it brings all of them to harm? And can she do it when she herself gets thrust into the spotlight?
