Ramirez’s parents were pitiful in their grief, but his young widow—a pretty, gentle girl who was left to raise a young son without a man to help her—had touched Mike most of all. 

He quickly changed the subject. “I appreciate the job. It means a lot to have something waiting for you when you get home.”
