Excerpt: 
Chapter One

Last Week


“Why should I?”

“Because we can be tracked from tower to tower if you leave your phone on.”

None of this was news to Andy. “So?”

He caught a slight hesitation, so brief, he had to think twice to be sure he saw it. “I want to win that money. Don’t you? Why else would you play the game?”

“Yes, I’d like to win, but I hardly think anyone would try to track us. Ordinary people don’t have the means to track someone’s cell phone.”

This week: We're in Andy's POV

“Don’t be too sure about that. A million dollars is a lot of money.”

 Why did she want his phone turned off so badly? She had offered a plausible explanation, but he’d bet she had another reason. As a marshal he knew that people lied, some of them very convincingly. Unfortunately, he thought she had skirted the truth. His internal hackles rose a bit. Did he really want to play ball with Liesel Wolf? He had enough troubles without adding any more.

 The Mustang shot forward the second the light changed; guess he’d waited too late to quit.

    Too late to leave now. I like how you showed his cynicism, typical in law enforcement officers. So, what's he going to do now? Can't wait to find out.

    Nice scene! I'm surprised that she said more than two words to him. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but the money is for charity?? If that's the case, the competitiveness is way over the top. If the contestants are personally winning the money, I could see why she's reacting this way. SO...I'm really wondering why she cares so deeply about winning the money unless her stakes are in some way personal...

    Love the buildup of tension. And the fact that you have my wheels turning so hard trying to figure it all out says that you're doing a great job with this story!
