Chapter One

Last Week

“Where are we?”

“We just passed Petersburg going south on I-85.”

Andy stretched as best as he could. “I like Petersburg. Have you ever been there? They have a Civil War battlefield and museum that you might enjoy.”

“This isn’t a pleasure trip.”

No, but it could have been fun anyway. Now, thanks to her sucky attitude it won’t be. “How much longer?”

She sighed as if the innocuous question offended her, but she said, “At least seven hours.”

This week: We're in Andy's POV. He speaks first.

“Do you want me to drive awhile?”

“I suppose you can. There’s a rest area up ahead. We’ll stop there for a moment.”

She wheeled into the rest area and jumped out of the Mustang almost before Andy got his seat belt unbuckled. As he watched, she hurried down the sidewalk and disappeared into the ladies’ room.
He stretched and meandered over to the vending machines to get a snack. A chocolate bar and soft drink sounded like just the thing. By the time he got his drink and candy, Ms. Wolf had joined him.

“Are you ready?” she demanded.
