Excerpt: 
Chapter One

Last Week



They reached the South Carolina state line around eight that evening. It wasn’t dark yet, but it soon would be. “Check the coordinates,” Liesel ordered as she piloted the car into the first rest area they came to. “We’re close now.”

Andy pulled out their GPS and studied it in the fading light. “The first coordinates should be hidden somewhere at this rest stop.”

They got out of the car with the GPS and started looking. He hoped his back would soon feel better. Riding for hours with only a few short breaks had just about killed him. He checked the GPS again. 

This week: I've skipped forward a few pages to the time where Andy and Liesel find the first set of coordinates.
“The cache must be inside the garbage can. We’re at the right place, and I don’t see anywhere else it could be.”

 “Melton wouldn’t put the cache in the garbage can. Someone might throw it away or take it.” She fell to her knees and ran her hands along the grass underneath the wooden rack that held the garbage can. “Maybe he buried it.”

 “I’ve got an idea. I’ll take the can out of the rack. Maybe it’s sitting on the cache.”

 When he removed the can, Liesel jumped up to look.

    Well, at least she didn't jump away from the can in alarm. That's a good sign, right?

    This feels very much like geocaching - something we did when the kids were younger a few years ago. That knowledge that it's hidden here somewhere, only a few feet away ...

    I love the complexity of this treasure hunt, running underneath the tension between the two of them and the mysteries about both people! You're weaving quite a tale here...great snippet!

    That would be too easy to find it under the trash can. But . . . I hope there's not a snake or something really awful under it. Good job ramping up the tension.
