Beyond the Book: It Was My Pleasure

Have you ever really had FUN writing a scene (or scenes)?

I’d have to say that I had fun writing every single book I’ve ever written. I started writing some years ago because I couldn’t find exactly the kind of thing that I like to read. Since that was the case I decided to create the type of book that I like. I wasn’t sure if I could write or not. I’d always wanted to, but there are many things I’d like to do and just can’t manage. Thankfully, writing turned out to something I loved doing, and I did write things that I enjoyed. I found publishers so they couldn’t have been all bad, LOL.

I still remember writing my first book. I didn’t tell anyone what I was up to until I found out if there was going to even be a book. I started spending so much time in my study that everyone began to wonder what I was doing. Why are you always upstairs? they asked. I had to confess then, but by that time I was pretty sure I could finish a book. The first couple of sentences were a torment to write, but once I got started I couldn’t type fast enough. I didn’t dust the house as much, and I didn’t care if I cooked balanced meals or not because I was enthralled by writing.

I enjoyed getting up early and walking before it got hot (I had started the book in the summer.), and the whole time I was walking I was writing scenes in my head. The walk was over before I even realized it. I thought I might get tired of writing, but it never happened. It gave me great joy to create characters and put them in difficult situations, all the while with an eye to how I’d resolve the conflict. I finished my first book and worried that I wouldn’t be able to think of anything else to write, but I did. It was too much fun to stop writing.

I’ve written scenes that made me cry and those that made me laugh. I’ve spent a lot of time in imaginary worlds of my own creation, and I always fell in love with my own characters. Writing was absolutely exhilarating. One thing I always made sure of was that I gave my stories a happy ending. Life sometimes doesn’t give us happy endings so I decided my stories would end happily.

Truly, I enjoyed every book I wrote, but a few things do stand out. Fortuna is my only romantic comedy, and I loved writing it because a lot of things in the book really happened to me or someone in my family. It was nice to remember the good times we’d had. I loved writing Return Engagement and Blue 52 because I fell in love with my characters. (Blue 52 is the sequel to Return Engagement.) I wrote one fantasy romance which was a lot of fun, and I wrote one inspirational romance in which my hero had to be reformed. I tried not to make it preachy. I was very satisfied how he turned out.

In conclusion, I had fun with almost every scene I ever wrote. I have had to put one off for a day or so to do a little thinking, but once I got started I enjoyed the difficult too. I hope all of you authors have been as lucky.
