First Position

First Position

by Prescott Lane

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Emory faces life’s challenges at the one place that’s never failed her, the ballet barre.  But even the barre can’t steady her when fate brings her face-to-face with her old college flame, Mason, who’s hoping to return to the NFL after a career-threatening injury.  Before they can surrender to their sexual desires and find salvation in each other’s arms, they need to come to terms with their past.  Mason must confront the demons that have set him on a path of self-destruction, while Emory must decide whether to keep her painful secrets locked away, or expose them and risk losing the love of her life.  But nothing can prepare Mason for what Emory has kept hidden, or the possibility that he himself may be to blame for the very secrets she keeps – and why they continue to haunt her.
Excerpt:
“So, little miss, want to fess up to what you were doing yesterday?”
“Well, it depends,” she said.  “Before or after, I threw my half-naked body at Mason?”
Wesley dropped the knife.  “Excuse me?”
Tomás raised his eyebrows and gave her a smile.  “It was just for a little while,” she said playfully.
“How little?” Wesley munched on his biscuit.
“Not too long.”
 “How naked?”
“I told you -- about half.”
“Which half?”
“A little of both.”
“Both breasts?”
“No.  Top and bottom.”
“Is that so?”  Wesley took a sip of his drink, thoughtfully considering what she’d said, like he was some kind of philosopher.  “Any action?”
“I tried.”
“How hard?”
“Pretty hard.”
“Was he?”  Wesley grinned at Tomás and took another bite of his biscuit.
“Shut up,” she said blushing.  “We decided it was best to take things slow.”
“That’s too bad,” Wesley said, and Tomás slapped his arm.  “In all seriousness, I’m happy for you.”
“Me too,” Emory said, rising from the table with her and Tomás’ plates.
Wesley grabbed her shoulder and whispered in her ear, “Did you tell him?”  Emory shook her head walking to the sink, and Wesley shot her a disapproving look.  Tomás eyed them both curiously.  “He deserves to know!”
 Tomás mouthed to Wesley, “Know what?”  Wesley shook his head that it was none of his business.
 “No lectures, Wesley.”  She scrubbed the plates.  “Let me enjoy myself and Mason before I ruin it.”
 “You need to stop running,” Wesley said.
 “I’ll stop when you stop.”
The Lady of Corpsewood Manor, Book 4 of the Craige Ingram Mystery Series
by Hawk MacKinney
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In the spacious den of Moccasin Hollow, his ancestral South Carolina home, part-time PI, exNavy SEAL Craige Ingram examines a platinum brooch designed like a dragonfly inside a jeweler’s box that he has discovered at the crime scene of Corpsewood Manor.  It is a remarkable piece of art…its wings and body worked in exceptional detail. Focusing toward the expected bulbous round eyes, his suspicions jar full throttle. Instead of a head, the empty sockets of a skull leer at him. His gut feelin’s tell him his SEAL buddy Grayson MacGerald’s investigation is considerably more than arson and a double murder trying to hide the theft of classic automobiles. The smoldering rubble of secluded Corpsewood Manor leads Ingram and another of their SEAL Team, Colorado Aspen ski buddy Spinner Krespinak, into a seedy tangle of smuggling crisscrossed and an unexpected encounter with a dead assassin from one of Spinner’s “closed” cases.

This was a dead woman.  The blunderbuss-shocker of seeing that particular woman-wraith joggled his reality.  Craige couldn’t have been more shaken if one of their KIA SEAL casualties had unzipped the body bag, stood up in full dress uniform, came to attention, and marched off.  He wrestled with brain-locked premonitions.  She was like a chokehold of death, much too lethally close for his liking.  As quick as he thought it, he dismissed this ready-made way to ending up very dead.  It almost had been for him and Spinner.  Couldn’t have been her…but…if it was, how was she here?  Why was she here?  Was she on a search and destroy, here to take care of loose ends?  Following him?  His thoughts were disjointed.  He felt like a lonesome abandoned fence post…lost for words in a honeysuckle-snarled weedy field.  Brain-locked, his feet epoxied to the spot like he was a pole-axed chunk of granite.

The pain of betrayal she'd put Kentucky-born, Texas-raised David Wellington Spinner Krespinak through came flooding back, fresh, beyond nasty, and stoking a rising anger.  Craige took it considerably more than personal when anyone locked cross-hairs on a friend.  Spinner was a hard-as-titanium, damn fine XO.  Solved problems; didn’t pass them on.  Took the heat for the dirty work Commanding Officer Craige wanted done.  Spinner, Gray and Craige as close, maybe closer, than blood kin.  Had shared guts and gore and KIA losses during more than a few ReCon-and-RetrieveOps.  With options down to one, if de rigueur critical they’d left their share of blood spattered calling cards.  His backside had been in a fair share of close calls, saved more than once by SEALmates.  Stay smokescreen concealed, kill if you have to…or be killed, unforeseeables could pack deadly surprises.  Some in CTU/S paid that price.

With postgraduate degrees and faculty appointments in several medical universities, Hawk MacKinney has taught graduate courses in both the United States and Jerusalem. In addition to professional articles and texts on chordate neuroembryology, Hawk has authored several works of fiction.

Hawk began writing mysteries for his school newspaper. His works of fiction, historical love stories, science fiction and mystery-thrillers are not genre-centered, but plot-character driven, and reflect his southwest upbringing in Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. Moccasin Trace, a historical novel nominated for the prestigious Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction and the Writers Notes Book Award, details the family bloodlines of his serial protagonist in the Craige Ingram Mystery Series… murder and mayhem with a touch of romance. Vault of Secrets, the first book in the Ingram series, was followed by Nymrod Resurrection, Blood and Gold, and The Lady of Corpsewood Manor. All have received national attention.  Hawk’s latest release in the Ingram series is due out this fall with another mystery-thriller work out in 2014. The Bleikovat Event, the first volume in The Cairns of Sainctuarie science fiction series, was released in 2012.

"Without question, Hawk is one of the most gifted and imaginative writers I have had the pleasure to represent. His reading fans have something special to look forward to in the Craige Ingram Mystery Series. Intrigue, murder, deception and conspiracy--these are the things that take Hawk's main character, Navy ex-SEAL/part-time private investigator Craige Ingram, from his South Carolina ancestral home of Moccasin Hollow to the dirty backrooms of the nation's capital and across Europe and the Middle East."

Beyond the Book: Christmas Dessert

"Hey, Elizabeth, give me the recipe of that chocolate dessert you always make at Christmas, the one that always makes people forget their diets. Tommy wants to treat his office personnel to a nice lunch, and he wants the chocolate thing for dessert."

"It is good, and it's easy too. Here's the recipe."

Chocolate Delight
¾ cup butter melted

1 ½ cup all purpose flour

1 cup chopped pecans

8 oz cream cheese softened

1 cup powdered sugar

13 ½ oz. whipped topping

1 pkg. vanilla instant pudding

1 pkg. chocolate instant pudding

3 cups milk

Combine butter, flour and pecans. Press into baking dish. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes. Cool completely. Combine cream cheese, powdered sugar and 1 ½ cup whipped topping. Blend thoroughly. Spread over crust. Chill. Combine pudding mixes and milk; beat 2 minutes with mixer at medium speed. Spread over cream cheese layer. Spread remaining whipped topping over pudding layer. Garnish with pecans and grated chocolate. Refrigerate.

I don’t do mine this way. I layer it in a trifle bowl. I start with a layer of the crust, then cheese mixture, then chocolate, then crust etc.

Snippet Sunday: Hank Made a Mental Note Never to Come Here Again.

Hello, readers, I'm Elizabeth Lane, and my co-hostess is my cousin Nikki Lane. Every December we take over Elaine's blog to give her a break. I'm especially fond of Elaine's new book Blue 52 because her hero Hank Lovinggood is my son. Blue 52 is a sequel to Return Engagement which told the story of me and Hank's father. Elaine said she's working on a book about my younger son, David. I can't wait to read it. In this excerpt, Hank just arrived at a Christmas party. The first speaker is his hostess.

"I asked Elaine if you were bringing a date tonight, but she said no…"

"Millicent, please don’t tell me you want to fix me up with somebody."

Millicent laughed as though he’d said something hysterical. "Of course I do. You’re one of the country’s most eligible bachelors, but you hardly date at all. Anyway, you’ll like this woman. I met her a few weeks ago when Vivian Turner had a launch party for that new artist, what’s his name, Peter Hamilton. She’s Peter’s cousin. She’s pretty too."

Hank made a mental note never to come here again.

Saturday Sample: The Best Selling Toy Of The Season

"Hey, Elizabeth. I heard that Elaine is participating in a blog hop along with a bunch of other authors."

"That's true, Nikki. You can go to http://elainepcantrell.blogspot.com/2013/12/mfrws-home-for-holidays-blog-hop-rob.html for more information."

"Is she having Saturday Sample today?"

"You mean are we having Saturday Sample. We're in charge of this blog until the end of December."

"Well, are we?"

"Yes, of course we are. What book would you like to share?"

"Mine, mine!"

"Readers, we might as well. Elaine did do a nice job telling Nikki's story."

"Tell the part where I first met Tommy."

"Okay. Here goes."

Finally, his turn came. He thankfully paid for his gag gift and

joined the throngs of people either going out or coming in. He saw

Bill English and lifted his hand to wave goodbye, but he didn’t see the

woman in front of him until he plowed into her. Both he and the

young woman who had helped him find his gift went sprawling to the

floor. Something in her bag broke with a loud crash when Tommy’s

knee smashed into it.

All the Super Mart employees in the vicinity came running,

including Bill English. “Are you guys okay?”

“I’m fine,” Tommy assured him as visions of lawsuits danced in

his head. “Ma’am, are you okay?”

To his horror, the young woman burst into tears. “You’ve ruined

everything! Teddy and Michael are going to be so disappointed, and I

guess they’ll stop believing in Santa Claus, but you don’t care.”

She jerked her bag toward her and held out two broken toys for

Tommy to see. “These robots are all that my boys asked for this year.

I put them on layaway back in September, and I finished paying for

them today. They’re the best selling toy of the season. You can’t find

them anywhere, and now you’ve broken mine.”

She shot Tommy a look of bitter enmity. Wiping the tears from

her cheeks, she scrambled to her feet and stalked out of the store.

“Be ashamed,” lectured one of the customers. “You ruined her

boys’ Christmas.”

“Yeah,” a man in the crowd contributed. “You could at least have

offered to pay for it.”

The Super Mart employees nodded their agreement. “Look at the

way he’s dressed. He’s got money to burn. He won’t even pay for

Nikki’s loss, and it was all his fault.”

You can buy The Best Selling Toy Of The Season at Amazon, B&N, and most online retail outlets.

EXCERPT:

Bath, England

1798

“Push harder,” the midwife said. “You’re doing fine. The child is almost here.”

The young woman fell back against the pillows, sweat plastering her hair to her head. “I cannot.”

Her friend wiped her forehead with a cool cloth. “Yes, you can. When the next pain comes, push with all your might. Can you do that?”

“Yes,” she whispered. As another pain wracked her body, she screamed in agony and pushed the child into the world.

The midwife caught the baby and began to wipe it clean. “A daughter. You have a fine daughter.”

The young woman sighed in relief. “Please, let me hold her.”

The midwife wrapped the child in a clean blanket and handed the infant to her mother.

The young woman stared at the tiny face. She had a full head of dark hair and a good set of lungs that she didn’t mind using. “Hush now, little one. No need to fret,” she cooed as the child quieted.

Mary smiled at her friend. “You did it.”

“Oh, Mary, isn’t she the most beautiful child?”

Mary squeezed her hand. “Indeed she is.”

Tears welled in the young woman’s eyes and spilled down her cheeks. “Whatever am I going to do?”

Mary had no solution to her friend’s dilemma. “I don’t know.”
