Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors

Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors, your chance to sample the work of a talented group of authors.

I've been sharing samples from The Captain and the Cheerleader. So far we know that Susan English, a teacher at Fairfield High, bet another teach $50 that she can make the football coach ask her out. Some other teachers have also gotten in on the bet. They are still in the teacher's lounge when the football coach, Kurt, enters the room and asks them why they were all so quiet. Susan asks if they're going to win the game that night, and said probably not. We begin where we left off last week. Kurt speaks first.

“Thanks for the vote of confidence. I hope we don’t let you down.” He threw a set of papers into his mailbox and turned toward the football field.

Robin giggled as she grabbed her book bag. “Not too great a beginning. What’s wrong, Susan? I thought he’d be falling at your feet.”

“It’s early days yet,” said Don. He picked up his briefcase and waved goodbye while the others collected their belongings, and Melissa turned off the light, leaving the lounge deserted and dark.

Blurb:
Susan English can’t stand Robin Lanford! She’s so full of herself she irritates everyone on the faculty of Fairfield High. When Robin bets Susan fifty dollars that she can’t get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the head football coach, Susan jumps at the chance to put the little heifer in her place. She had no idea that teaching Robin a lesson would irrevocably change her life, strain treasured friendships, and throw two families into chaos.

Sounds as if Susan is going tp make Kurt want to impress her? Wonder if it will work.

I am liking this story, Elaine. On my TBR. A good vacation read over Christmas, methinks. :-)

Robin is deliciously unlikeable!
I like that Susan is playing this deep.
It makes a much more engaging story.

Early days indeed! She's still got some time to think of ways to step her game up.

Don't you want to punch Robin? Cause I know I do.

I'm actually feeling kind of sorry for Kurt... It seems like he's just a pawn to them, a plaything -- not a person.

Oh women. They are still like bratty girls in high school. Good story, Elaine, and well written as always.

I'm with Susan. I think I'd rather take my time with out the "reality TV peanut gallery" on her progress. Good snippet, Elaine.

These adults are SO acting like their students right now...great snippet.

I agree with Veronica. If I didn't know better, I would have thought they were students. Certainly a great set-up to some mischief. I am eager to find out what happens next.

Oh, heavens, but Robin does make you want to smack her. Neither of them are actually doing so well, maturity wise.

In my years as a teacher, I don't remember any staff room antics like this. Mine were much more boring.

Is it bad that I kind of loathe Robin? What a jerk. And I've known many many many people like that in my life. They suck big time.

I also disagree with some of the previous sentiments. I was a band director in my previous life, and somehow we and the coaches always got up to all sorts of antics. Not always in the staff room, but elsewhere on occasion.

Having been married to a high school math teacher and multi-sport coach for 32 years, I can attest to the immaturity of "some" teachers. ;-) Love this story and putting it on my TBR list for sure!

Nice... You've got the snark and banter down pat.
