EXCERPT
Each writing prompt is optional. If, for whatever reason, it does not speak to you, let it be. Who knows? It might make more sense to do the prompt later in the process.
Take a moment to reflect on all the writing goals you've set for this year. Now,
grab a piece of paper and write down the following words:
I give myself permission to create.
Once you're done, stick it in a place where you'll see it daily.
A Word With the Author:
1.Did you always want to be an author?
I did, but after being told that becoming an author meant choosing a hard, penniless life by one person too many, I kept that dream secret for many, many years. It never stopped me from writing though, I just didn’t tell anyone that I wrote until I was twenty-eight.
2.Tell us about the publication of your first book.
The first book I published under my own name, with me as the author, was Get Out of Your Own Way. It’s a 31-day divination challenge for writers and other creatives. I’d done the challenge on Instagram for my followers and then, one day, someone suggested I turn it into a book.
It made me laugh, because no-one I know who does these so-called tarot challenges for their followers publishes them, but the person who’d asked me about publishing it in book form asked another question: Does that mean you shouldn’t?
Well… No.
I’m so very glad I listened to that person, because I now have ten books in that genre published, in four different languages. It was scary though, publishing that first book. I really didn’t think people would want to buy it or that it would be received well, but it turns out I was very wrong. Magic happens when you step out of your comfort zone indeed.
3.Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?
I write in multiple genres, including Young Adult fantasy, and the first author to come to mind when I think about that genre is Cassandra Clare. I have only read her Shadowhunter books, but I’m positively addicted to those.
4.What's the best part of being an author? The worst?
Oh, that’s a hard question! There are so many aspects to being an author… For fiction, I would say: the moment it all comes together. That’s such a glorious feeling. For non-fiction: hearing that someone benefitted from something I’ve created.
The worst part for me would be the perpetual vulnerability. There’s so much of me out there, so many things that tell the world who I am and how I view things, what I believe in and stand for. It doesn’t stop me from creating exactly what I want, but it is a rather constant presence, that ‘I just want to hide under the blankets and never come out’ feeling.
5.What are you working on now?
At the moment, I’m only working on my YA fantasy trilogy, although a rather persistent story idea has been popping up in my head again over the past few days. I don’t have time to sit down and plot anything yet, but I have been taking some notes, just in case.
As for non-fiction, the fifth book in my Seven Simple Spreads series, which is a series of tarot spreads that speak to the chakra system, has been almost ready for a while now, but I’ve been so caught up with finishing 52 Weeks of Writing Vol. III that I haven’t had the mental space to even look at what work is still left for me there. It might be finished for all I know!
I’m also working towards the French translation of 52 Weeks of Writing Vol. I. The translator is expecting the manuscript by the end of January. Next will be German.
I have some other things in the works, but these are my priorities.
